“WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WITCH ELM?”

1943, Worcestershire, England: several school aged children were playing in the allegedly haunted forest of the rural county. What they stumbled upon shocked the community to its core. Inside the hollowed out trunk of the ominous witch elm, they found the skeletal remains of a young woman. The body had been there for at least 18 months. Only a wedding band, a shoe, and some tattered clothing remained. Authorities worked tirelessly, and though evidence proved that she had been murdered, they could not discover the identity of the girl. In a field near the forest, there stands a stone obelisk erected as a monument to the village. Soon after the discovery of the murdered girl, graffiti appeared on the obelisk reading, "Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm". To this day, no new evidence has come to light. Every time officials remove the graffiti from the obelisk, it returns anew within a few days; a testament to the community's ongoing desire for an answer to the mystery of Who Put Bella in the Witch Elm?
