THE OTTAWA SCHOOL OF ART

35 George Street, Ottawa ON

In the heart of the Byward Market, a tall, sturdy and discreetly beautiful building has provided a safe space for artists in the Nation’s Capital for generations. The Ottawa School of Art is an organization that was established in 1879 to help bolster culture and led to the creation of the National Gallery of Canada. The building itself, a late Victorian-style commercial building, was acquired in the 1980s as a space for artist’s studios, as well as display and educational spaces. The symmetrical facade features elegant brick work and large inviting windows on the ground floor. In front of the OSA, the Totem of Canada stands proudly. Realized by the communal efforts of many artists, the totem includes symbols that represent different cultural groups that have shaped Canada. Today, the Ottawa School of Art is thriving with a second location in the city’s east end offering a diverse selection of art classes for all ages. The Ottawa School of Art (OSA) acknowledges that it operates on the unceded and un-surrendered territory of the Haudenosaunee, Mohawk, and Algonquin Peoples.

This print is a reproduction of a drawing made by Kat Jetté in 2024. The image is printed on Epson archival matte paper and packaged with a foamcore backing.
