On the Northern banks of Loch Crinan, in the western part of Scotland, stands a small, picturesque castle. Built in the 12th century, this castle is one of the best preserved in Scotland, and is still inhabited today. Possibly one of the most grisly tales of the castle is that of a young bagpiper. During the English Civil War, the castle was occupied by the Campbell clan. One day, the soldiers discovered a traitor in their midst. The young piper was caught playing a song across the loch; the melody contained altered notes - and was a message to his master, the leader of the enemy MacDonald clan. When discovered, the Campbells thought of a fitting punishment; they cut off the hands of the piper and let him bleed to death from his wounds. First thought to be just a legend, the story was confirmed in the 1800s, when a full skeleton (save the hands) was discovered during a renovation of the castle. The remains were buried in an unmarked grave on the grounds, and to this day, visitors claim to have seen the spectre of the dutiful piper, piping out his warning across the salty waters of Loch Crinan.
