"Château Laurier" - Ottawa

There are few Ottawa landmarks more iconic than the Château Laurier. Situated next to the parliament buildings, and modelled after their design, the stately hotel has sheltered countless souls since its construction in 1912. The Château Laurier is steeped with history and tragedy. The president of the Grand Trunk Railroad, Charles Melville Hays, commissioned the hotel in 1901 - along with the Union Station building across the street - to serve the ever growing population of the Nation’s Capital and bolster tourism. The massive palatial castle was meant to open in April 1912, but was delayed by the sinking of the Titanic, where CM Hayes tragically lost his life. Local historians and spiritualists are convinced that the Château is haunted by as many as ten spirits. The hotel is currently owned and operated by the Fairmont company, which maintains historical hotels and landmarks around the world.
